Soccer boring? Huh?

Not your typical repeat, don't worry. There's obviously multiple reasons for this sentiment, but to touch on the highlights.

There is the action factor.

However, I'm on the lookout for another explanation: average shot length. ASL is a huge factor in film, the duration of clips/shots having an impact on the texture. On average, I've seen the number as 5 seconds, or 4-6 to be more precise. This hasn't always been the case and is attributed to increasing audience ADD and increased cinematographic awareness. Yuri Tsivian points out:
[T]he fastest film made between 1902 and 1909 has an ASL of 15.8 seconds while the slowest one made between 2000 and 2006 has an ASL of 10.01 seconds. In other words, the fastest runner in the beginning-of-the-past-century group is 5.7 seconds behind the slowest one of the twenty-first century.
Now this doesn't take into account everything, especially the content and complexity of the shots. A long shot can captivate us, and a boring short clip is still, well boring.

Soccer is an admittedly subtle game in regards to appreciation. While watching the Germany/Uruguay game though, I noted that the shots are exceptionally long compared to what most TV viewers are accustomed to. Even basket ball, baseball, and gridiron football camera shots are much shorter, and while I have no idea of hockey, I'd guess this is the case too. Haven't seen any research regarding ASL & sports, but it seems to me that commercialist sociologist or academics should get to it.

Obviously though, there's another problem: announcers. Now, TV commentators are always annoying. Generally, it's better to hit the mute and turn on the radio where descriptive play-by-play announcing, real analysis, and relevant stats is going on. Seriously though, if you're gonna pay someone to just talk is it really that hard to find someone who is good at it?

  1. I personally enjoy the accent of whoever does commentary for the World Cup. If they could get Craig Ferguson and Conan O'Brien, the ratings would be insane.

  2. I completely disagree with everything you have written and will write in the future, or at least I imagine I would, as I haven't managed to finish a complete sentence that you have penned, on account of it's far too complicated for my adolescent scrambled brains to comprehend.

Please refrain from posting your demented tripe and find some awesome lolcats and girlie pics to post instead.

  4. Family Circus? Your insults completely fail to reach their mark, you scrawny internet tough guy, you hamburgled dolt!

I merely wish to stem the ever rising tide of faux internet sages who believe they are *all that*, etc. etc, and help return our national stockpile of pussy pictures to compete with world markets.

Now, if you call me an idiot once more, I will report your behavior to the proper internet authorities and find a picture of your whore of a mother to post on my own blog, which consists on nothing but lyrics to Greenday songs and pictures of me cutting myself with a pumpkin carver.

  5. Haha, idiot! (yes, I once again hurl that epithet in your face, you dunce!)

That guy who runs this blog will ban you! I fear nothing!

As an aside, this Carl guy seems interesting, I wonder if he is single, as I am an amazingly beautiful single young Russian that needs a manly man.

  6. If anyone was curious, I deleted that cause I used the Freudian slip of pictures instead of readers. Let me try again:

This is not a serious blog for serious READERS, this is a private blog for friends. Is this Carl? Anyways feel free to post what you want.

  7. I see. Forgive my outburst, and subsequent verbal spat with that hairbrained goosepoop who belittled you.

And I'm not sure who Carl is, but whatever.

  8. :-)

I missed the memo that soccer was boring. Not that it's my favorite sport to watch or anything, but baseball, golf and poker are way more boring to watch. As well as half of the winter Olympic sports.

I'm guilty as charged though, for enjoying fast paced sports like basketball or hockey.
